General Fredrik Vilhelm Bull-Hansen

General Fredrik Vilhelm Bull-Hansen (1927) retired from military service and from the position as Chief of Defence (CHOD NORWAY) in September 1987. He previously served in a variety of command, training and staff positions at unit, formation, army and joint staff level, nationally as well as internationally.

He served in the Norwegian Forces in Germany I95I-1952. Subsequently he was appointed instructor to the Norwegian Artillery Officer Cadet School (Befalskole) and later to the School of Artillery. He was in I956-1957 assigned to the first United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF I) which observed the termination of hostilities after the Suez crisis and the Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai. 

After renewed periods with field units and in staff positions, he served as member of the Directing Staff at the Norwegian Army Staff College I964-1966 and later in I968. He was defence attaché in Finland I970-1973. He was then appointed Commandant of the Army Staff College. From 1975 he served as ACOS Intelligence at Chief of Defence Staff, thereafter as Chief Intelligence. In 1979 he was appointed Commander Allied Land Forces North Norway in the rank of major general. 

Late I98I in the rank of lieutenant general Bull-Hansen was asked to establish in the field and to command the multinational security arrangement between Egypt and Israel, the Multinational Force and Observers, MFO. in line with the Camp David Accords of 1979. From this position he was called back to national service in the rank of general and in the capacity of CHOD, Norway. 

Fredrik Bull-Hansen passed Artillery Officer Cadet School I947, Military Academy I951, Norwegian Army Staff College I959, British Army Staff College I964 and NATO Defence College I976. He studied business management at the Oslo Business Academy I969 and worked as a research associate at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs I967-68.  

Bull-Hansen has served at the board of a variety of governmental and non-governmental institutions, nationally as well as internationally.  Since retirement from military service he has been engaged in activities vis-à-vis industry, research institutions, philanthropic organisations and as a lecturer and commentator. He is the author of analyses and essays on national and international security issues, on conflict development and conflict resolution, on management and leadership , including ethical challenges in the military profession.

General Bull-Hansen was married to Turid Bull-Hansen (1929-2002). They got two sons.
